Mary Curnock Cook, Chief Executive of UCAS said: “Deciding which course to pursue in higher education is an important decision; so my advice to anyone who isn’t really sure of what they want to do is to pause and reflect - over 120,000 people apply in their 20s.

“It’s essential to do thorough research and get advice from those who know you best, like parents and teachers, before opting for higher education.

“To help students make that fully informed choice, UCAS provides a wealth of information and advice on our website (including videos with sign language) and on social media. Access to comprehensive information is really important because you’re committing to three or four years of study.

“Stumbling from school into university without having found a course that energises you could mean you don’t get the full value of the higher education experience. Those with a true passion for their subject or a clear career path in mind are more likely to bring out the best in themselves through higher learning.”
