Top tips to avoid that dreaded sea of blank faces when you ask 'who knows what they want to do next?'

UCAS expert, Sam Sykes, used to be a teacher. She remembers how challenging – and inspiring – it can be to support students as they take that next step.

'We’ve all been there. You’re faced with a room full of students who genuinely don’t know what to do next. Those blank faces can strike fear in the heart of even the most experienced teacher!'

Make it fun

'I used to get my class researching the most obscure jobs they could go into with a specific degree. It got a few giggles. Most importantly, it got their attention. Quizzes and questionnaires work well too. Our career quiz helps students consider careers based on their personality type.'

Keep their options open

'Encourage students to keep an open mind. This information about post-18 options is a good place to start. They can also sign up for our personalised emails for advice about routes and subject areas that interest them. Visiting a UCAS exhibition and university open days are good opportunities for students to talk to people who are passionate about what they do.'

Consider timing

'Looking back, I think we spend far more time helping students refine their personal statements than the bit that comes before that – exploring their options. Perhaps this is something that should be taken into consideration more when planning. Our presentation on making the right choices is a good starting point for you and your students.'

Demystify language

'We throw around words like ‘undergraduate’, ‘modules’, and ‘Apply’, but most 16 year olds have no idea what they mean! Our jargon-buster video demystifies language that can be a turn-off.'

Challenge their choices

'A decision has been made – hurrah! Before you wave them off on their chosen path, make sure they know where it will lead them. We’ve created a free online course for students exploring their higher education options. It starts on 6 November 2017. Why not use it in the classroom to get everyone talking?'
