Changes to criminal convictions questions for 2019

Find out what’s changed and why...
Posted Fri 6 April 2018 - 13:13

We’ll be making the following updates to our application form for 2019 entry:

  1. Removing the requirement for all students to declare whether they have any relevant unspent criminal convictions.
  2. We’ll only ask students who apply for certain courses – for example, those that involve work with children and vulnerable adults, such as medicine, teaching, or social work – to declare whether they have any criminal convictions, including spent convictions. This question will only appear if a student is applying for one of these courses.

Why is UCAS making this change?

We’re committed to ensuring no one is deterred from applying to university or college due to the application process. Data protection law is also changing, therefore we’ve consulted with the Information Commissioner's Office to make sure all the information we gather is absolutely necessary, and legally compliant.

When will these changes happen?

The changes will be made to applications for 2019 entry, and will be reflected in Apply 2019 on:

  • 22 May 2018 for UCAS Undergraduate
  • 18 July 2018 for UCAS Conservatoires
  • 5 June 2018 for UCAS Postgraduate

What do I need to do?

If any of your support materials reference criminal convictions questions, please update them to reflect these changes.
