Modern apprenticeships are available in Scotland and give you the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification, while getting industry experience and a salary.

What are the entry requirements for a modern apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is like a real job, but with a study element, so you’ll need to:

  • be aged 16 or over – there is no upper age limit. In some roles, you need to be over 18 for health and safety reasons
  • be a Scottish resident
  • have the right to live and work in Scotland

A modern apprenticeship is a job, so you’ll have to satisfy any other requirements from the employer. For example, they may ask for a certain amount of SCQF qualifications.

But remember, it’s not all about grades. It’s about showing the employer that you’re dedicated, willing to learn, and passionate about what you’re applying for. Showing your personality is the best way to stand out.

How do modern apprenticeships work?

A modern apprenticeship is a chance to earn while you learn, and you’ll also study for an industry-recognised qualification. The qualification you get will depend on each individual apprenticeship vacancy. You’ll spend most of your time doing on-the-job training and the rest studying. There will be no cost to you to do the apprenticeship.
